RSS
I was working on configuring an RSS feed that I could access from all of my devices either on my
home network or on a VPS. I had a local docker configuration on a Pi5 that made running FreshRSS a breeze but
I accidentally borked it trying to set up a hub and spoke VPN configuration. I probably could have
fixed it but I'm considering turning it into an emulation machine so I put it away for now and setup my
local server on a Pi2 or 3 which is not capable of running docker. How hard could it be to get an RSS feed
going? Well I had a lot of trouble getting postgres database working and I couldn't figure it out... I'll
need to backtrack on that but I remembered that there is a KDE feed called Akgregator that works pretty well.
SO... instead of having a centralized RSS feed I am now running individual applications on each device
and updating my OPML file and keeping it in cloud storage. Yeah having access to one feed from anywhere would
be pretty cool but it is so much easier just updating the OPML file and loading it on each device. Also found
a pretty decent RSS feed for Mac called Vienna. Since I don't use social media I'm pretty reliant on RSS
to figure out when YouTube videos come out or when someone streams live on Twitch, and of course I follow
lots of news organizations, newsletters, and podcasts as well.
